Magic Tyres Whangārei sells and fits new tyres for utes, SUVs, 4x4s, vans, trailers, light trucks, and cars, all from our shop at 103 Port Road. If you need new tyres in Whangārei, your size is likely already in stock. We've been in Whangārei for over 40 years and keep 1000+ new and used tyres and rims in stock. We're about 5 minutes from the CBD. Fitting and wheel balancing are included with every tyre, so you don't pay extra to have them fitted.

What you get when you buy new tyres in Whangārei from us

Every new tyre from Magic Tyres Whangārei comes fitted and balanced, with both covered in the price. Here's how it usually goes:

Step 1: Provide Your Tyre Size

  • You give us the size off the sidewall (it looks like 205/55R16) and we tell you what we've got.

Step 2: Review Your Options

  • We talk you through the options across the brands we stock and what each one's good for. Some last longer on the highway, some are just good value.

Step 3: Fitting and Balancing

  • We remove the old tyres from the rims, fit the new ones, and balance the wheels so there's no shake through the steering.

Step 4: Final Checks

  • We set the pressures to the optimal pressure (to save you fuel and reduce wear on your new tyres) and check the tread on any tyres you're keeping.

A set of four usually takes about 30 minutes from when we start. Warranty is 5,000km on all brands, and some carry more. The tyre stewardship fee is $7.65 incl. GST for most new tyres, which covers recycling your old tyres properly (see the FAQ below).

While the car's up, we'll look at how the old tyres wore. If one edge is bald and the rest is fine, that usually points to alignment issues, and we can arrange a wheel alignment for you through our partners at Craig's Firestone, just down the road. Sorting it out is one of the easiest ways to get more life out of your new tyres.

Tyre brands we stock in Whangārei

We carry multiple sizes in Goodride, Blackhawk, Cratos, Gepormax, Haida, Hakuba, RoadX, RoyalBlack and Triangle. Not every brand comes in every size, so give us a ring with your tyre size and we'll tell you what's on the rack.

Need a different brand? We can also get in many other common brands, including Kumho, Hankook, Laufenn, Petlas, Marshal and Linglong.

New or second-hand: which makes sense for you?

It really comes down to your preference and how much you want to spend. Many of our customers want a brand-new tyre while others are keen to save a few dollars. We sell high-tread second-hand tyres, some of which are actually new or near-new, and some are premium brands like Michelin.

Generally, they will all have a minimum of 80% tread (e.g. a new car tyre has around 8mm of tread, and our second-hand tyres will have at least 6mm). A good second-hand tyre may be the better buy if you mainly need to pass a WOF without spending much. We sell both, so we've got no reason to push you one way.

If this sounds like youWe'd usually suggest
You're on SH1 most days or do long open-road tripsNew or second-hand (check out our stock on the day)
You tow a boat or trailer, or the ute's often loadedNew or second-hand (check out our stock on the day)
Your WOF is due this week, and money's tightHigh-tread second-hand
You're selling the car in the next few monthsHigh-tread second-hand
Our second-hand tyres are hand-picked and safety-inspected, and a used tyre with plenty of tread might be right for you, or you might prefer a brand-new option.

Why Whangārei drivers come to us

Most people come to Magic Tyres Whangārei because we usually have their size in stock and we'll give them a straight answer on what they actually need. With over 1000 new and used tyres and rims on site, we can often sort you out from what's on the racks.

A lot of our customers drive work utes, family SUVs, cars and 4x4s that spend time on SH1 and on our local Northland gravel roads, so we keep a good range of ute, SUV and 4x4 sizes. Quality tyres don't have to be the dearest ones on the rack, and we'll tell you when a mid-range tyre will do the job.

We're locally owned, and we've been in Whangārei for over 40 years. We'd rather you drive home on the right tyre and come back for your next set than squeeze an extra fifty bucks out of you today.

You can pay by credit card or Afterpay. WINZ quotes are also available. Tell the team when you call, and we'll put one together, or you can email us to request one.

A quick tip before you phone

Find Your Tyre Size

  • Have your tyre size ready before you phone, because it's the first thing we'll ask. It's printed on the sidewall and looks something like 235/35/19 or 205/55R16.

Check Load Rating and Tread Pattern

  • If you're only replacing one tyre to get through a WOF, we'll need the load rating too (something like 91Y, printed just after the size). It's also worth noting whether the tread is symmetrical, asymmetrical or directional.

Bring a Photo if Unsure

  • Can't find any of it? Snap a photo of the sidewall and bring it in or email it to us.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy new tyres in Whangārei?

You can buy new tyres at Magic Tyres Whangārei, 103 Port Road, Whangārei. We stock new tyres for utes, SUVs, 4x4s, vans, trailers, light trucks and cars, as well as used tyres and rims. Fitting and balancing are included. Call 09 438 3534 with your size, and we'll check stock.

How much do new tyres cost in Whangārei?

It depends on the size and brand, so the quickest way to get a real number is to call with your tyre size. Prices start at around $100 for a 13” tyre and around $185 for some common 16” and 17” tyres. Fitting and balancing come with every tyre. If the full amount's a stretch, Afterpay and WINZ quotes are both options.

Is fitting and balancing included when I buy new tyres?

Yes, fitting and wheel balancing are included with every tyre you buy from Magic Tyres Whangārei. They're part of the service, not an add-on. Wheel alignment is a separate job ($85 incl GST), and we'll only suggest it if the wear on your old tyres points that way.

What's the minimum legal tread depth for a WOF in New Zealand?

The minimum tread depth for a WOF in New Zealand is 1.5mm. That's the legal floor, not a target, and wet-road grip drops off well before you get there. We do free tyre inspections, so drop in, and we'll measure it in front of you and tell you honestly how long you've got.

Do I have to replace all four tyres at once?

No, you don't have to replace all four at once. Plenty of people replace one or two at a time. If it's just one, bring the load rating and size so we can match it properly for your WOF. We'll also tell you if the tyre on the other side is too worn to sit alongside a new one.

Can I pay for new tyres with Afterpay in Whangārei?

Yes, Magic Tyres Whangārei takes Afterpay, as well as credit cards and WINZ quotes. Afterpay lets you split the cost of new tyres into smaller payments. We don't set any spend limits, so just the standard Afterpay criteria apply. For a WINZ quote, ring us with your tyre size, and we'll put it together for you to take to Work and Income.

What is the tyre stewardship fee?

The tyre stewardship fee is a government-regulated fee charged on new tyres under Tyrewise, New Zealand's tyre stewardship scheme. It funds the collection and proper recycling of old tyres, instead of them ending up in landfill or being dumped. For most new tyres, it's $7.65 incl GST. You can find out more on the Tyrewise website (tyrewise.co.nz).
