What you get with a wheel alignment

A wheel alignment adjusts the angles of your wheels so they point straight ahead and sit square to the road. With the correct alignment, the car tracks straight with the steering wheel centred, and your tyres wear evenly across the tread.

Here's what happens when you bring it in:

  • The team check the pressures and look over all four tyres first.
  • The team read the wear on the front tyres. A bald inside shoulder with good tread in the middle provides much information before the car goes on the machine.
  • The team measure the angles against the manufacturer's specs for your vehicle.
  • The team adjust what's out (usually the front toe) and set the steering wheel straight. Depending on the vehicle and what adjustment it has, this can also include camber/caster and rear alignment.
  • The team tell you what was found, including any worn steering or suspension parts that would stop the alignment from holding.

A standard alignment is $85 incl GST and takes about 1 hour. If you're buying car tyres from us, tyre fitting and wheel balancing are included in the tyre price. The alignment is charged separately.

Alignment or balancing: which do you need?

A car that pulls or a steering wheel that sits crooked usually needs an alignment. A steering wheel that shakes at open-road speed usually needs the wheels balanced. People mix the two up all the time, so here's a rough guide.

What you're noticingMost likely cause
Car drifts left or right on a flat, straight roadAlignment (check pressures first)
Steering wheel off-centre when driving straightOften alignment
Inside or outside edge of a front tyre worn baldAlignment, often front toe
Shake through the steering wheel around 80–100 km/hWheel balancing

Not sure which it is? Bring it in. The tyre wear usually gives the answer away.

Why drivers come to us for wheel alignment in Whangārei

Magic Tyres Whangārei has been in town for over 40 years and keeps 1000+ new and used tyres and rims in stock. If the alignment shows a tyre is already worn past saving, there's a good chance the replacement is already on the rack.

We'll be straight with you about what's worth replacing. If a front tyre still has decent tread in the middle but the inside edge is getting close to the limit, we'll show you and tell you honestly how long it's got. If you do need a replacement, our hand-picked, safety-inspected second-hand tyres are available or new ones are available.

A lot of what we align around town comes in after a knock on a kerb, potholes after heavy rain or regular gravel road driving. We also see plenty of cars after a lowering kit or a set of mag wheels goes on. Both change the geometry, so the alignment needs redoing.

You can pay with Afterpay or a credit card, and we do WINZ quotes.

A quick tip before you come in

Check your tyre pressures before booking an alignment, because one soft front tyre can make a car pull just like a bad alignment. If you're not sure, pop in for a free tyre pressure check and tyre inspection.

Here's a test you can do in the driveway. Run your flat palm across the front tread from the outside edge in, then back the other way. If it feels smooth one way and sharp the other, that's feathering, and it usually means the toe is out.

When you call, mention any recent suspension work or a lowering kit. If you might need tyres too, have the size off the sidewall ready. It looks like 235/35/19.

How much does a wheel alignment cost in Whangārei?

A standard wheel alignment arranged through Magic Tyres Whangārei costs $85 incl GST. Some vehicles take longer to adjust, such as 4x4s or lowered cars, but we offer the same great price for all vehicles. You are welcome to call us with your make and model, and we'll confirm the price before we make a booking. Afterpay and credit cards are both fine.

How do I know if my car needs a wheel alignment?

The usual signs are the car pulling to one side, a crooked steering wheel, or one edge of a front tyre wearing faster than the rest. Check the inside edges in particular, because you can't see them from the side. If any of these show up after a hard knock on a kerb, get it looked at.

Should I get a wheel alignment when I buy new tyres?

Yes, if your old tyres wore unevenly. Uneven wear means something's out, and new tyres on a bad alignment will wear the same way, so you lose a lot of tyre life. If the old tyres wore evenly across the tread, your alignment is probably fine as it is.

Can a bad wheel alignment fail a WOF?

Not directly, but the uneven tyre wear it causes can. In New Zealand, tyres need at least 1.5mm of tread depth within all principal grooves that contain moulded tread depth indicators and around the whole circumference of the tyre to pass a WOF. A tyre can look fine in the middle while the inside shoulder is bald, which can catch people out.

How often should I get a wheel alignment?

There's no fixed rule, but get it checked whenever something changes. That includes a hard hit on a pothole, suspension or steering work, and fitting new tyres or larger wheels. If the car drives straight and the tyres wear evenly, you're probably fine.

If your car pulls or wears front tyres unevenly, visit us to get it fixed.
